Complete List of World Cup Hat-Tricks (1930–2026)

What Counts as a World Cup Hat-Trick

This list covers only men’s World Cup finals tournaments, not qualifying matches. A player who scored four or five goals in a match is included once, with every goal listed. Scores are shown from the scorer’s team’s point of view, and “aet” means after extra time. Every entry was checked against FIFA’s official list of all 58 hat-tricks and the Opta Analyst list. Scores, goal minutes and stages are not given on the FIFA or Opta lists; they come from the historical match list and, for 2026, from match reports. Where a minute could not be confirmed, we say so rather than guess.

Hat-Tricks From 1930 to 1978

The early tournaments were the most prolific. Thirty-two of the 58 hat-tricks, more than half, were scored between 1930 and 1978, including eight at the 1954 World Cup, where Hungary’s Sándor Kocsis scored two on his own.

Hat-Tricks by Decade

Bar chart of men's World Cup hat-tricks by decade from the 1930s to the 2020s
Hat-tricks per decade, calculated from the 58 entries above.

The 1950s were the high point, with 13 hat-tricks, and eight of those came at the 1954 World Cup in Switzerland alone, still the most at a single tournament. Scoring rates fell sharply after that: the 1960s produced only three and the 2000s only two. The 2026 tournament, the first with 48 teams and 104 matches, pushed the count back up with four, the most at one World Cup since 1986.

Hat-Trick Patterns: Stages, Penalties and Defeats

Looking across all 58 entries shows a few clear patterns. Most hat-tricks come early in a tournament, against weaker group opponents, and only a handful have arrived in the decisive rounds.

StageHat-tricks
Group stage (all formats)38
Round of 168
Quarter-final5
Semi-final3
Third-place match2

Penalties

Fourteen of the 58 hat-tricks included at least one penalty, and 19 of the goals in those hat-tricks came from the spot. Eusébio in 1966, Rob Rensenbrink and Teófilo Cubillas in 1978, Harry Kane in 2018 and Kylian Mbappé in the 2022 final each scored two penalties in their hat-tricks. Before 1966, every World Cup hat-trick was scored without a penalty.

Extra time

Five hat-tricks were completed with goals in extra time: Ernst Wilimowski and Leônidas in the same 1938 match, Geoff Hurst in the 1966 final, Igor Belanov in 1986 and Mbappé in 2022.

Hat-tricks that did not bring a win

A hat-trick does not guarantee victory. Ernst Wilimowski scored four for Poland and still lost 6–5 to Brazil after extra time in 1938. Josef Hügi scored three for Switzerland in a 7–5 defeat by Austria in 1954, the highest-scoring match in World Cup history, and Igor Belanov’s three for the Soviet Union were not enough in a 4–3 extra-time loss to Belgium in 1986. Cristiano Ronaldo’s hat-trick earned a 3–3 draw, and Mbappé’s ended in a penalty shoot-out defeat.

Four and five-goal games

Seven players scored more than three in a match: Wilimowski (1938), Ademir (1950), Sándor Kocsis (1954), Just Fontaine (1958), Eusébio (1966) and Emilio Butragueño (1986) scored four, and Oleg Salenko scored five in 1994. No one has scored four or more in a World Cup match since Salenko.

Patenaude, Stábile and the First World Cup Hat-Trick

Two hat-tricks were scored in the first week of the 1930 World Cup in Uruguay. Bert Patenaude scored three for the United States against Paraguay on 17 July, and Guillermo Stábile scored three for Argentina against Mexico two days later. For many years Stábile was widely listed as the first hat-trick scorer, because some early records did not credit all three of Patenaude’s goals to him. FIFA recognised his hat-trick in 2006, which made him the first.

Both matches are part of the total of 58. The only question was the order, and current records, including FIFA’s own list and Opta Analyst, place Patenaude first.

World Cup Hat-Trick Records

First World Cup Hat-Trick

Bert Patenaude, United States 3–0 Paraguay, 17 July 1930, with goals in the 10th, 15th and 50th minutes.

Fastest World Cup Hat-Trick

There are two ways to measure it. The quickest from first goal to third is László Kiss, who scored for Hungary against El Salvador in 1982 and completed his hat-trick in 7 minutes 42 seconds during a 10–1 win, according to Opta Analyst. The earliest in a match is Erich Probst of Austria, who had three goals by the 24th minute against Czechoslovakia in 1954.

Most Goals in One World Cup Match

Oleg Salenko scored five for Russia in a 6–1 win over Cameroon on 28 June 1994. It remains the only five-goal haul in World Cup history.

Hat-Tricks in World Cup Finals

Only two players have done it. Geoff Hurst scored three as England beat West Germany 4–2 after extra time in 1966, with two of his goals coming in extra time. Kylian Mbappé matched him in 2022, scoring twice in two minutes late in normal time and again in extra time, but France still lost to Argentina on penalties. Mbappé is the only player to score a hat-trick in a final and finish on the losing side. You can see how those finals fit into the full history on our list of every World Cup winner.

Players With More Than One World Cup Hat-Trick

PlayerTeamHat-tricksTournament(s)

Batistuta is the only player to score hat-tricks at two different World Cups. Kocsis, Fontaine and Müller each scored two at the same tournament.

Oldest and Youngest Hat-Trick Scorers

The youngest is Pelé, who was 17 years and 244 days old when he scored three in Brazil’s 5–2 semi-final win over France in 1958. The oldest is Lionel Messi, who was 38 years and 357 days old when he scored three against Algeria on 16 June 2026. Both ages are taken from Opta Analyst.
